While walking by the lake, I notice how the green of the trees
bursts so unashamedly.
A pair of men are dancing; They are pretending
the whole world is their kitchen,
and I ask myself what use I have for all this shame.
I have been so afraid of catching the reflection of how I see myself
in strangers on the street that I’ve given
up the simple victory of meeting others in their eyes.
But May has given
me and the city this violet evening,
and I know we are all looking for the answers to our
unanswerable questions in this neon heat.
When I look at the woman staring off under the willow
or the couple sleeping inside the last few
feet of sunlight, I feel so grateful that I can try
to figure it out anyway. I want to live a little louder and
a little less scared.
Look at how we are ribboned in gold.
Look at how we don’t even know it.
Maybe there are no answers for me to find here
but right now,
there are two men on the grass twirling and catching each other,
and they are falling in love.
